Biomechanics and Ergonomics

Currently, the trend is moving towards dental restorations conservative removing the minimum amount of healthy tissue. It is frequent in endodontic treatment the use of prefabricated intraradicular posts for the dental restoration. However, clinical studies have shown that the failure rate of these restorations, after several years of service is high, due to root fractures or takeoff of restoration.
The design parameters of the intraradicular post (material, length, thickness and shape) can significantly affect biomechanical behavior of the dental restoration and, therefore, the risk of failure (or lack of retention). Therefore, the appropriate choice of the intraradicular post is of great importance for successful endodontic restoration.
Therefore, the main objective of the project is to obtain clear conclusions on the individual and combined effects of different design parameters of prefabricated dental Intraradicular posts in the biomechanical behavior of endodontic restorations in single-rooted teeth and to propose guidelines for the optimal design of these posts. The study will focus on prefabricated posts as these are to be used most commonly in clinical practice, because the restoration can be performed in less time (in a single session). To fulfill this objective an analysis will be performed  from a dual approach: in vitro analysis and analysis using finite element models (FEM).
