Cranial protector to
prevent head injuries to people affected by autism spectrum
disorders who suffer epileptic seizures
Abstract:
The mission of the CAUPROTECT project is
to propose a viable solution to those affected by epileptic seizures
through the resolution of a cranial protector that avoids head
injuries encephalic. Arises at the initiative of the staff of the
association CAU, who in their work with people with autism have
witnessed cranioencephalic injuries resulting from instability if
wandering or as a result of unpredictable epileptic seizures. This
generates the need to use protective helmets.
At present, the protection used by people with disabilities
suffering from generalized atonic crises (sudden loss of strength)
is limited to the use of sports helmets, especially rugby or hockey.
The use of such helmets does not improve the quality of life of the
users, but at least it avoids to a certain degree the injuries
caused by the falls. In addition, these helmets generate a constant
discomfort in users, added to a very negative social impact.
Therefore, they are often rejected by users.
